Is Fish Oil Supplement Advantageous?
By Angie Ng

In the field of medicine, advances are happening almost instantly. Because diseases are rampant across the globe, researches are being done to find cures and alternative treatments for these conditions. One popular option that has shown promise against many types of diseases is fish oil and fish oil supplements. There are still many studies done today to answer the question: is fish oil supplement advantageous?

Fish oil supplements come from fish sources such as herring, albacore tuna, salmon, mackerel, and sardines. These are often sold in oil form, or in capsulated forms which are meant to be taken as dietary supplements. Fish oil is said to be beneficial because it contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are needed by the body, since humans cannot synthesize their own. Two of the most notable and most widely studied forms of omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexenoic acid (DHA). The question now is, how is fish oil supplement advantageous? Below are some diseases that researches have found to be treatable and preventable thanks to fish oil supplements.

Arthritis. In year 2000, the Journal of Rheumatology found that EPA and DHA levels are very low in patients with arthritis. Fish oil supplements help reduce the degradation of the cartilage in the joints, so less pain is felt. Aside from that, other journals published in the same year, have shown how fish oil can help relieve the stiffness in people with join inflammation.

Mental conditions. Until the present, the supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with depression and ADHD or ADD is being examined. There have been accounts that attribute mental degradation due to low levels of essential fatty acids like omega-3. It is ideal to consult a doctor for the recommended doses of fish oil supplements that can be administered on a daily basis.

Cancers. From 2000 to 2003, journals have already published research on how fish oil supplements and thee omega-3 fatty acids in them can help in the production of proteins that fight off tumors in the body. Also, it has been established that the inclusion of DHA and EPA in the diet can make a patient more receptive to the effectiveness of chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and fish oil supplements have long been applauded for their ability to improve blood flow and provide overall protection for the heart. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends taking fish oil capsules, or even having at least two servings of fish per week. Examples of fish are sardines, halibut, salmon, and tuna.

Is fish oil supplement advantageous? As an answer to that question, yes it is. But before making drastic changes in the diet, or before purchasing fish oil supplements, it is best to seek the advice of a medical practitioner on this matter. The public is reminded that there are recommended doses of fish oil that can be taken on a daily basis, and these doses depend on the current health state of the individual.
